Fairfax County Redevelopment and Housing Authority Scholarship Program

 

Apply for a $5,000 scholarship for postsecondary education including technical training. We are accepting applications for 2024-25 academic year through April 30, 2024.
 

About the Scholarship Program


FCRHA scholarships are designed to promote postsecondary education and technical training for Fairfax County residents who live in affordable housing supported by the FCRHA. In 2023, 10 scholarships were awarded, valued at $5,000 each.

Scholarships are submitted directly to the institution the recipient is enrolled in. Funds may be used for tuition and related fees as well as books, supplies, and course equipment. 

Eligibility Checklist

 

​All the following must be met to be eligible to apply to the FCRHA Scholarship Program: 

  1. STATUS – Applicants must be a member of a household currently receiving housing assistance through the FCRHA.  This includes, but is not limited to, households receiving any type of federal, state, or local rental housing assistance and households residing in any property owned by the FCRHA.

  2. RESIDENCY– Applicants must be a resident of Fairfax County, Virginia for at least six months prior to submitting their scholarship application.

  3. ACCEPTANCE INTO AN ACCREDITED SCHOOL (postsecondary school must be located within the U.S.) - Applicants must be accepted by an accredited postsecondary education institution including a two-year or four-year college, university, vocational or trade/technical school.

Requirement Checklist
 
  1. APPLICATION - Apply online. Application must be completed in its entirety and submitted online. Please have your materials prepared before you begin the online application, as you must complete it in its entirety once you begin.

  2. LETTERS OF RECOMMENDATION – Submit, with your online application, two (2) signed letters of recommendation.

  3. ESSAY QUESTIONS – Submit, with your online application, responses to two (2) essays.  

  • Essay Question 1 (Mandatory):  All applicants must answer the following question, in writing, up to 500 words.

    • What does affordable housing mean to you?

  • Essay Question 2:  All applicants must select and answer one of the following questions. Responses can either be in writing, up to 500 words, or can be submitted through a video (maximum of three (3) minutes long).

    • Where do you see yourself five years from now?

    • Think about an experience from your own life.  How has this experience influenced you and your future goals?

    • How have you been significantly influenced by a particular person or leader in your community?

    • What is the biggest obstacle you have overcome in life?  How has that helped shape who you are today?

    • How have you contributed to your community’s well-being?

Note: Video responses must be submitted through a link that is accessible to the FCRHA Scholarship Selection Committee and viewable on any device.   

​4. TRANSCRIPT OR GED CERTIFICATE  - Submit, with your online application, the most recent report card, a transcript from your postsecondary institution, or GED Certificate, as applicable.

Submission Deadline

Please ensure you meet all eligibility criteria and submit all required documents as noted on the checklist above. Incomplete applications will not be considered.  All applications must be received no later than Tuesday, April 30, 2024, by 4:30 p.m.
