MOVING TO WORK

“Our Moving to Work authority has enhanced our ability to implement affordable housing solutions unique to Fairfax County,” Lenore Stanton, Chair, FCRHA

National Distinction as a Moving to Work Housing Authority

The FCRHA is designated by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) as a Moving to Work (MTW) agency. The distinction enables the FCRHA to implement innovative, locally designed programs and initiatives to achieve results.

Benefits for Fairfax County Taxpayers

Under Moving to Work, the FCRHA has used federal funds efficiently and implemented various initiatives that successfully deliver benefits to taxpayers, including:

  • Supporting economic independence: The Family Self-Sufficiency (FSS) program helps families save and work towards financial independence. Using MTW authority, program changes were made to FSS to increase its effectiveness. Fatima, who works in our local school system, participated in the Family Self Sufficiency program and was able to purchase a house. Watch her story.

  • Improving housing mobility: The FCRHA aligned federal rental assistance to the local market, helping households live in their community of choice while being less cost burdened.

  • Increasing housing stability: Through the efficient use of funds, the FCRHA has supported extremely low-income older adults who would otherwise potentially face homelessness.

  • Creating strong communities: Through Moving to Work, programming at affordable housing communities has helped households gain access to a variety of support services.

Why the FCRHA’s Moving to Work Status is Significant

  • Local Decision Making: Customized affordable housing solutions are critical to the vibrancy of our local economy and those who live here.

  • Prestigious National Standing: The FCRHA is one of the first housing authorities in the country to be designated as a Moving to Work agency. Known as “America’s Housing Policy Lab” only 139 agencies across the nation have this designation.

  • Innovation is the Expectation for Fairfax County: Flexibility and creativity, provided through the FCRHA’s Moving to Work designation, are key to expanding access to affordable housing opportunities.
