150 new independent living, affordable homes for older adults
Leaders from the Fairfax County Redevelopment and Housing Authority (FCRHA), Fairfax County Government, and The Michaels Organization came together today to celebrate the opening of The Lodge at Autumn Willow.
Featuring 150 affordable homes for older adults, The Lodge at Autumn Willow reimagined a previously vacant 11acre parcel located on the corner of Stringfellow Road and Autumn Willow Drive in Fairfax in the Springfield District as affordable housing. The community features walking trails that connect to several Fairfax County parks, and offers proximity to retail at Fair Lakes Shopping Center and other destinations.
“Our mission at the FCRHA is to create affordable housing opportunities that promote inclusive and thriving communities. The Lodge at Autumn Willow is an example of a thriving community, nestled in a private, wooded area with park trails, walking paths, fitness studios and gathering areas that promote active living and socialization,” said Lenore Stanton, Chair, FCRHA.
“We need more housing for people across all income levels and generations. Affordable housing for older adults is an economic issue, as many working people are caring for aging parents with limited incomes. The Lodge at Autumn Willow offers that affordable option, while also contributing to our goal of 10,000 net new affordable homes by 2034,” said Jeff McKay, Chairman, Fairfax County Board of Supervisors.
“For our seniors that want to stay in Fairfax County, staying in their homes or finding an affordable place to live has become a challenge. The Lodge at Autumn Willow represents a high quality, affordable option for our income challenged residents.” said Pat Herrity, Springfield District Supervisor, Fairfax County Board of Supervisors.
“We are grateful to all of the partners including the county and Virginia Housing for this support, and who helped bring this much needed, amenity-rich affordable housing to a prime location, while enjoying the natural beauty that surrounds this community,” said Jonathan Lubonski, Michaels’ Executive Vice President of Development. “We look forward to being part of this community for years to come,” he said.
The development of The Lodge at Autumn Willow began in July of 2020 when FCRHA entered an interim agreement with The Michaels Organization through the Virginia Public-Private Educational Facilities Infrastructure Act. The property was designed by KTGY Architects and is managed by The Michaels Organization. FCRHA retains a ground lease for 99 years, guaranteeing preservation of affordable housing at The Lodge at Autumn Willow for almost a century. In addition, the FCRHA awarded eight project-based vouchers, helping to ensure that the property will support households with a range of income levels.
