Affordable housing initiatives in Fairfax County recognized nationally and by the Commonwealth of Virginia
The Fairfax County Redevelopment and Housing Authority (FCRHA) has been recognized for its innovative affordable housing solutions with industry awards.

FCRHA wins national awards
FCRHA won a Community Innovation Award from the National Association of Housing and Redevelopment Officials (NAHRO) for its One University property. Located adjacent to George Mason University, One University includes 120 affordable homes for families and 120 for older adults. It was opened in November, 2024. FCRHA is now in the pool of nominees for an Award of Excellence from NAHRO, which will be awarded at their annual conference in September. FCRHA won NAHRO Awards of Merit and Excellence for the Residences at North Hill in Alexandria last year.
FCRHA received an Award of Excellence from the National Alliance for County, Community and Economic Development (NACCED) for the development of the Fair Ridge Shelter. The shelter, which began welcoming guests in Spring of 2025, reimagines a former extended stay hotel into shelter space for families experiencing homelessness. FCRHA won an NACCED Award of Excellence in 2024 for its One University property.
FCRHA wins state award
The Fair Ridge Shelter also won recognition from the Virginia Association of Counties (VACo) with a 2025 Achievement Award, which recognizes excellence in local government programs. The Fair Ridge Shelter is one of four Fairfax County programs to receive the award.
