Share Your Thoughts on Changes to Affordable Homeownership for our Workforce

What is your feedback on proposed updates to the Workforce Dwelling Unit program?

Background: Home sales prices in Fairfax County have been increasing faster than income. The Workforce Dwelling Unit (WDU) program provides households with low to moderate incomes opportunities to purchase a home when new residential developments are built. This helps create equitable access to affordable homeownership for Fairfax County residents who would otherwise be priced out of the local market.

Public Input Requested: Fairfax County is considering revisions to the policy in the Comprehensive Plan to ensure that the WDU program is effectively serving workforce housing demand, including:

  • Reducing the income levels that are served in the program

  • Expanding the areas where these units would be created

  • Ensuring that the types of units available to affordable homebuyers reflect those available to general market homebuyers

The draft revisions to the policy are available at Plan Amendment 2023-CW-1CP | Planning Development (fairfaxcounty.gov). Please email comments to Lia Niebauer at Lia.Niebauer@fairfaxcounty.gov. Comments will be accepted through April 7, 2024.
