Deadline Extended: Social Security Beneficiaries with Children Must Act Now to Claim Economic Impact Payment
Update October 2020 ***IRS Extends Deadline through November 21, 2020***
The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) is continuing to look for ways to help Social Security beneficiaries with qualifying children obtain their Economic Impact Payment (EIP). The EIP provides $500 per qualifying child via direct deposit to eligible beneficiaries. For those beneficiaries who were unable to submit information on their qualifying children to receive their EIP benefit, the IRS has extended the deadline until November 21, 2020.
Federal beneficiaries who did not receive an EIP benefit for qualifying children should use the Non-Filer Tool on IRS.gov to provide information on their qualifying children to receive this benefit. If you already entered information in the IRS’ Non-Filer Tool, no further action is required.
Catch-up benefit payments are anticipated to be issued by the IRS by mid-October based on the information submitted.
Who is eligible for this benefit?
The Non-Filers tool is designed for people with incomes typically below $24,400 for married couples, and $12,200 for singles. This includes couples and individuals who are experiencing homelessness. People can qualify, even if they do not work or have no earned income. If any of the following criteria apply to you, you may still be eligible to receive an EIP benefit for any qualifying children you have:
You receive Social Security retirement, survivors, or disability benefits, or Supplemental Security Income (SSI) payments;
You did not file a 2019 or 2018 tax return;
You have a qualifying child under age 17; and
You did not already enter information in the IRS’ Non-Filer Tool for themselves and at least one child.
