Local Jurisdictions Joining Forces to Create a Regional Housing Equity Plan

Updated: Jul 1, 2021

Where you live continues to have a significant impact on your life outcomes in the metropolitan Washington region. Now, for the first time in over 20 years, the region is coming together to collaborate on fair housing. Fairfax County Government and the Fairfax County Redevelopment and Housing Authority are joining with neighboring jurisdictions and the Metropolitan Washington Council of Governments (COG) in the development of a Regional Housing Equity Plan, also known as the regional Analysis of Impediments to Fair Housing Choice (or regional AI for short).

The Regional Housing Equity Plan will ensure that the region is better aligned in its efforts to expand housing choices so that all people can choose to live in communities with access to quality jobs, schools, housing, and transportation options. COG and its members are closely coordinating with federal partners and hopeful that this plan will serve as a model for other metropolitan areas in the future.

The Regional Housing Equity Plan will be informed by a robust community participation and comment process that allows for meaningful dialogue with key stakeholders. A Community Advisory Committee comprised of regional organizations will help ensure that the engagement process provides critical insights for addressing barriers and developing solutions to achieve fair housing choice.

Information on future public engagement opportunities and other initiative updates will be posted online at mwcog.org/fairhousing. In the meantime, members of the public can email feedback to the Project Team at fairhousing@mwcog.org.
