Fairfax County's Catalyst for Affordable Housing Solutions

A Message from Lenore Stanton and Tom Fleetwood

Affordable housing is the foundation and catalyst for many things: personal success, diverse and welcoming communities, and Fairfax County's economic competitiveness. But as satisfying as it is when we open the doors to a new community, most of our work is not in building walls, hammering nails and roofing. It is what we do to spark affordable housing opportunities for people.

During Fiscal Year 2023 (July 1, 2022 – June 30, 2023), the Fairfax County Redevelopment and Housing Authority acted as a catalyst to generate affordable housing opportunities in the Fairfax community. Through bringing together real estate developers, local elected officials, federal and state governments, nonprofit organizations and the community, the FCRHA sparked:

  • Historic local investment in affordable housing: $51.9 million

  • Additional federal rental assistance for residents

  • A record number of new affordable homes in the development pipeline

  • Additional resources to help people successfully maintain affordable housing

  • Preservation of dozens of affordable homes

The Fairfax County Board of Supervisors and our public and private partners have a common goal: giving people an equitable chance to live in an affordable home. We are passionate about affordable housing because the people we serve are the true catalysts who make Fairfax County a better place. We look forward to sparking even more innovative housing ideas together next year.
